Why We Say No to Some Supplement Brands (And What That Means for the Ones We Take)

September 10, 2026

Quick Look

We say no to supplement brands with broken unit economics, unfixable compliance risk, or no real product-market fit yet.

Saying no protects the brand's ad account, our other clients' shared risk pool, and everyone's time.

If you pass the fit check, you get a team that isn't distracted by accounts that were never going to work.

Most agencies say yes to every brand that fills out a form.

We do not.

At eBrandX, we turn down more supplement brands than we take on. That sounds strange coming from an agency.

But it is the whole reason the brands we do work with tend to stick around and actually scale.

Why This Even Matters to You

If you are evaluating agencies right now, you have probably noticed something. Almost every agency says yes.

A sales call happens, a proposal gets sent, and within a week you are signing a retainer. Nobody asks hard questions about your margins, your compliance history, or whether your offer actually converts cold traffic.

That is a problem. An agency that takes every brand is an agency that cannot specialize in your brand's actual obstacles.

We wrote about what we check on the first call, and what that process usually turns up is the same handful of deal-breakers, over and over.

The Real Reasons We Say No

None of these are personal. They are patterns. If your brand hits two or more of these, an honest agency should slow down before taking your budget.

  1. Unit economics that do not survive paid ads yet. If your contribution margin after cost of goods, shipping, and merchant fees cannot absorb a realistic customer acquisition cost, no amount of creative testing fixes that. This is a pricing or offer problem, not an ads problem.
  2. Compliance red flags that cannot be fixed in 30 days. Disease claims, unverifiable "clinically proven" language, or a labeling issue that touches FDA structure/function rules. We can fix soft claims. We cannot fix a brand that refuses to change them.
  3. No landing page or funnel worth sending traffic to. Sending cold traffic to a broken funnel just burns your budget faster. We would rather fix the funnel first, or say no, than watch that happen.
  4. Expectations that do not match the category. Supplement ads are slower and pricier than most verticals right now because of stricter review and higher competition. A brand expecting overnight 5x ROAS is not ready for an honest conversation yet.

"A brand we say no to today is often a brand we welcome back in six months, once the offer or the compliance issue is fixed. That is a better outcome for everyone than taking the retainer and quietly failing."

A Hypothetical (But Very Common) Example

Picture a brand we will call "Brand A." This is not a real client, just a composite of patterns we see often.

Brand A sells a $35 sleep supplement. Their cost of goods and fulfillment eat almost 60 percent of that price.

After merchant fees, there is barely enough margin left to pay for a single click, let alone a full funnel of cold traffic.

On paper, Brand A wants "aggressive scaling." In reality, the math does not work until the offer changes, maybe through a bundle, a subscription discount, or a higher price point with better positioning.

An agency that says yes anyway will spend Brand A's budget testing creative that was never going to be profitable. An agency that says no, and explains why, gives Brand A a real shot at fixing the actual problem first.

That distinction is the difference between a wasted quarter and a fixable one.

What We Look For Instead

On the flip side, here is what makes us say yes fast.

We Say Yes When We Say No When
Margins can absorb a real CAC Margins only work at unrealistic CAC
Claims are structure/function, not disease-based Brand refuses to soften risky claims
A funnel exists and converts at some rate No funnel, or one that has never converted
Timeline expectations match the category Expects overnight results at low spend

What Saying No Actually Protects

This is not just about our win rate. Three specific things are on the line.

  1. Your ad account. A supplement brand with weak compliance is more likely to trigger a restriction. That risk does not stay contained, it can follow the account and the business manager.
  2. Your budget. Money spent chasing an offer that cannot convert is money that will not come back, no matter how good the media buying is.
  3. Our other clients. Agencies that overextend across too many mismatched accounts spread their best people thin. Saying no to the wrong fit is what keeps the team focused on the right fit.

This is also why we think hard about pacing. Brands that come in with the wrong expectations about pricing structure tend to churn fast, which is part of what we cover in how supplement ad agencies actually charge.

What This Means If You Get a Yes

If your brand clears the fit check, you are not getting a generic onboarding sequence.

You are getting a team that already believes your brand can win with the right creative and structure, because we did the work to confirm that before the contract was signed.

That is a very different starting point than an agency that says yes to everyone and figures out the fit later, on your dime.

It also means the first stretch of the relationship moves faster. We already know your margin ceiling, your claims boundaries, and your funnel's starting point. Nothing about that needs to be discovered mid-flight.

We laid out what that early stretch actually looks like, phase by phase, in what to expect in your first 90 days with a supplement marketing agency. And if you are already working with an agency but suspect the fit has changed, our piece on signs you have outgrown your current agency covers the other side of this same question.

Questions Brands Ask Us About This

Does saying no mean my brand is a bad brand?

No. It usually means timing is off, not that the product or founder is flawed. Fix the specific blocker and the door stays open.

Will you tell me exactly why you said no?

Yes. We always explain the specific reason, whether it is margin, compliance, or funnel readiness, so you know exactly what to fix.

Can I come back later once I fix the issue?

Absolutely. Some of our best client relationships started with a no six months earlier.

A Simple Self-Check Before You Book a Call

Ask yourself these before reaching out to any agency, including us.

  • Can my margin realistically absorb a $30 to $80 customer acquisition cost, depending on price point?
  • Have I reviewed my claims language against structure/function guidelines, not just what sounds good?
  • Does my landing page currently convert any traffic, even a trickle?
  • Am I expecting a 90-day runway, not a 9-day one?

If you answered yes to most of those, you are exactly the kind of brand we like working with. If you answered no to one or two, that is fixable, and worth a conversation anyway.

Either way, the fastest way to find out where you actually stand is a real conversation, not a form.
